Went and saw both of these today. If Frost/Nixon had come to CO, I'd have gone and seen that, too!!
First, Doubt. This was remarkable in so many ways. The story is really simple. Did the priest molest the boy? The movie is like an onion and by the time you get to through the layers, you'll be shocked. I felt nothing but tension throughout the entire film; there were times when I was downright uncomfortable. The director would use these tilted camera angles and these really tight close shots of the actors, to where you feel disoriented and uncomfortable. The performances by all three main actors was rock solid. I would be hard pressed to find better performances this year.
Valkyrie. I'm a HUGE history buff and I love WWII, so I have been planning on seeing this flick since I first heard about it. And it's directed by Bryan Singer so what's not to love? I am pretty sure they employed every British actor except maybe Ralph Fiennes to be in this movie and there are maybe 2 German actors, which I always find a little weird. Why not just get some good German actors? Whatever. Movies like this both restore and destroy my faith in humanity. Here is an occasion where people will stand up for what is right no matter what the cost. I am moved by that every time. On the other hand, you have people who are so mired into this destructive situation that they act out of fear rather than common sense. Anyone who is familiar with the story knows that these guys did briefly take control but once people found out Hitler was still alive, they turned on them. Then I get philosophical and wonder what would make people do this? I've never been in this kind of situation and I would like to think that I would help in the resistance, but who knows. I am shamed for people who recognized a tyrant for what he was, and when he was relatively powerless, and they had the chance to do the right thing, they chickened out and bowed down to him. That makes me very sad.
